You will need a floppy drive to provide the drivers of controller for the installation program, or you will need to burn a CD of Windows XP with the controller drivers slipstreamed into the installation.

If you're still having problems, unplug the USB cable, run uninstall and reinstall the printer software again. Then reconnect the USB cable and it must be detectable again. Verify that the connections in Device Manager for the entries of the printer, under Bus USB controllers are looking for USB, Mass Storage Device print media or anything with a yellow exclamation point or an unknown device. Then click on Device Manager in the list. Press the windows key and press X on the keyboard at the same time in the office. Remove the USB cable plugged in, remove the printer in the devices and printers (if the list) and the Device Manager. This can also occur when the printer is already recognized as the USB connection and windows does not yet detect. (not a station or a hub) Try a different USB port on the computer. Make sure that the USB cable is connected directly to the computer. The USB cable should not be more then 6 feet.

(do not use a hub or a surge protector) This ensures that the printer is full on and can help this situation. Turn on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet. The CD is used for different models, the P1100 is your printer series. I tried setting up the printer from the command line before starting X and usblp seems to recognize the printer properly.Hi see by your post that the printer is not detected. Any help would be much appreciated for my sake and that of anyone I might hit when I throw my printer out the window. Other than that, I'm not sure what to do. Why does Arch insist on reading it as a CD instead of a printer while other distros do not? I have all of the plugins installed relating to hplip and cups that I could find in the repos. For example, I'm dual booting Fedora and after some minimal configuration, Fedora recognizes the same printer and has no trouble printing with no reference to any smart install business. For some reason, however, this Smart Install really seems to be biting Arch over other distributions (with some exceptions). I do not have access to a Windows machine at the moment and the Linux solution posted by dudinea is not working for me. I figured out that this comes from a problem with HP making the absolutely absurd decision to enable "Smart" Install by default without providing a (reasonable) way to switch it off without Windows. I have an HP LaserJet P1102w printer that hp-check will not recognize.
